I found golden-tailed caterpillars on the briar patch .I tried to get the butterfly out twice, but it didn't work. They sit on a forage plant motionless and then die. What is the reason?

People! Who knows tell me!
I know a place where you can catch Grammia obliterata in the caterpillars. This season will be the fourth. Prior to this, 3 seasons were not very successful. The mortality rate is monstrous. The caterpillars die-they refuse to eat. There is breeding experience - apollo swallowtails, various local medvelitsy such as Kai and flavia, a mountain of different nymphalids. There are no problems with anyone! Maybe not a master, but for a long time and not a novice green. I can't figure out what to do with obliteration!
I keep the caterpillars in plastic containers. I tried different herbs. Standard - plantain, dandelion, legumes. This year, for the first time, I noticed that younger children are sitting on wheatgrass. I just gave it to you. But in the end, the same thing happens. Caterpillars brought from the forest eat well for a couple of days, and then day by day less and less. They die of starvation as a result, most likely - they just dry up, refuse to eat. There aren't many parasites coming out. I get butterflies only from those caterpillars that I have already taken large. Apparently they ate for a couple of days, then sat for 3-5 days starving and pupating. They sit each in a separate container. Now on the wheatgrass. Already 3 days in the house and the appetite is clearly on the decline.
What to do with them???

It may be useful to anyone.

Very convenient and inexpensive cages of industrial production smile.gif.

It is called "Jar for pickles 3 l", manufacturer: LLC ZPI "Alternative", address: Bashkortostan, Oktyabrsky, 8 Marta str. 9a. www.alternat.ru

As you can see from the photo, it requires minimal fine-tuning: make a lid from a grid and fasten a bottle of water to install the feed box. At the same time, the feeder does not dry out and does not rot, its replacement takes a little time and does not require daily replacement.

Internal frame with handle, can be easily removed and inserted. I paid only 57 rubles for such a jar in the store smile.gif

Do you mean Callimorpha dominula? Well, her caterpillars (like many bears) are omnivorous. Forage plants are nettle, ashberry, geranium, meadowsweet, but it happens that the caterpillars feed on willow, raspberries, strawberries... The caterpillar overwinters. Pupation in spring, pupa on the soil.

What does Papilio machaon eat? Umbrella vegetables: angelica, carrot, dill, etc., etc.

I don't know what kind of caterpillar the archon has, but it's 100% swallowtail.

Well, it goes without saying that this is not an archon at all: a comrade is making fun of him smile.gif

You're being a little too categorical.
In the Volgograd region, a significant part of the population prefers wormwood.
Yes, and in the North Caucasus

Yes, I really proceed from what is customary to feed. Usually umbrella people and feeds.

This week I received several Nymphalis polychloros pupae from caterpillars collected from outside. I want to try to get unusual color options by changing the temperature in which the pupae are kept. Will I get results if I put the pupae in the refrigerator? And if so, how long should I keep them there?

08.06.2012 18:26, cherepahovod

In the refrigerator, they will practically not develop, they will fall into suspended animation.

Then what temperature regime is needed to change the color?

Hello! I have several questions at once. About five days ago, a bear caterpillar pupated in my soil (earth). Due to the fact that you have to go to the country, you constantly have to take a container with a pupa with you for several days. Doll was shaking in the car because of the roughness of the road. There was no way this could have negatively affected development? And in about how many days will the chrysalis give birth to a butterfly?

Put it in the refrigerator for a while, then take it out.

- It is better to dig up the pupa and carry it in cotton wool in a small box (with ventilation).
- Shaking does not affect it, as long as the ground did not damage it during driving.
- Depends on the type. Maybe in a week, maybe in a year.

Question to experienced butterfly breeding specialists. I'm having this problem: in a freshly sprouted butterfly, the scales are often damaged when straightening from the slightest shifts of the straightening tape, because apparently it does not have time to dry properly after hatching. On the other hand, leave it longer in the cage - it will get frayed on the walls of the cage. Once I froze it and kept it on the pin for a day to dry out, but it still didn't help - the scales are damaged when straightened. I need some advice.

What to do with a hawk moth caterpillar. The children found it while walking around the city. there is an assumption that she was going to pupa up. What to feed, where to bury? smile.gif

In general, I collected land in Banco, she was like a miner zaburila.. How deep are they buried for pupation and how long will this process last? How long will it be in the pupal stage, what are the requirements for the land? Yes. By its appearance, I determined that it was a Poplar Hawk Moth. Well, it was found on a road planted with poplars.smile.gif

The ground should be slightly moistened (very slightly). Most likely, it will be released in 3 weeks.

And I have another question. Approximately how many days (weeks) will a Kaya Bear caterpillar be in a pupal state?

21.06.2012 20:15, Бабистр

Good evening!
A similar question is: how long does the chrysalis stage last in polychrome approximately? I read somewhere that it's only 2-3 days, is that so?

if only pupated then about a month.

Good afternoon!
lots of questions shuffle.gif

1 Tell me about sagittarius sorrel. Does it need land? Or is she "like everyone else" hanging on the stem?

2 Bear kaya, pupated now, when will she come out?

3 Unpaired silkworms from the pupa after what time to wait?

At night, the caterpillar pupated. What should I do now?and what to expect?

25.06.2012 13:14, Leilamrf

The main thing is not to touch it. Do not move, do not move. As a child, out of curiosity, I moved the pupa, a butterfly came out - one wing is normal, the other is asymmetrically developed, it could not fly frown.gif.

25.06.2012 13:25, Вася

And in the cold it does not need to be moved?

25.06.2012 16:54, cherepahovod

No, you don't need to, unless of course you don't need the obabochka to come out in winter.

27.06.2012 8:59, Helen0210

Tell me, what is the best way to place a butterfly cage-in a vertical position, or horizontal?

27.06.2012 13:42, cherepahovod

It is better in a vertical position, but it is desirable that the exit is on the side.

27.06.2012 21:42, Shamil Murtazin
