And on time-is it with the onset of autumn or until December to leave??? And if you put it in the refrigerator, then immediately with a vmem inventory??? A twig in a sufficiently large container? ...

04.08.2008 15:26, RippeR

questions are good smile.gif
There is nothing to advise on the content, it is better to tell people who bred it themselves.
In general, the butterfly itself is easier to keep - it flies to itself when and where it wants, it does not even need to be fed.
Caterpillars are quite another matter. If the butterflies mate and lay eggs, then it will be necessary to put the eggs in a normal place, preferably in a closed container, so that the goslings do not spread out on hatching.
Then you need a large case where the goslings will sit and feed. They eat a lot of things - all sorts of fruit leaves-petioles, cherries, cream, pears, etc. The main thing is not to moisten the container, otherwise the goslings have diseases and they can die - they get enough moisture from the leaves. Well, they need to wear twigs or just leaves from one forage tree, until they become large, fat and beautiful and do not go to pupation. Pupate on twigs, twisting cocoons, and then as always..

But I wonder if my gosling (now a pupa) will become a beautiful butterfly after all... Where can she get a pair? )))

04.08.2008 16:06, Ilia Ustiantcev

If a female hatches, don't take it anywhere - cover it with something breathable and wait. smile.gif

04.08.2008 16:40, omar

Aha, the cavaliers will fly themselves for many kilometers smile.gif

04.08.2008 16:46, RippeR

remove with the onset of cold weather - the surest sign.
If a male arrives, then you can let him go or leave him as a souvenir or for beauty, or attract a couple to the light where they are found. If the female, then at the open window as mentioned above, cover with something airtight and that's it.. The males will come by themselves, and then it's a small matter.
Find out by the antennae when it hatches - if the antennae are thin-female, if strongly combed, then male)

That is, in the cold season, cocoons can be sent very long yes? and even by mail in the proper packaging??

The winter of 2006/2007 in Crimea was very cold, with frosts of up to -27. But nothing, then, in the spring, the Piri flew as if nothing had happened. And all the other butterflies, too.

05.08.2008 10:33, solnyshko a

Great!!!
I don't even know who I want more?..... The female, of course, is more interesting-the opportunity to breed ))) And test the theory about the "male sense of smell")))
This morning I was wondering where I should put it. Go to the balcony or leave it in the kitchen for now? The balcony is hot during the day... But in the morning fresh ))) I opened the kitchen window a crack and let in some fresh air... Then I left the sash on the "window" and jumped to work )))

Put it in the farthest corner away from the sun's rays. And on the balcony you risk drying it out.

So after all, she would be fine in the kitchen on the windowsill behind the blinds???? confused.gif

And for the literature, thank you in advance ))) Here is my address: novikovaa2004@list.ru

06.08.2008 4:22, Raptor

the pupa will lie down until next spring.
And where to deliver that?
In general, Hemaris will arrange everything by mail )

I don't even think you'll get it by mail.central Kazakhstan is a bit long.although maybe in winter at low temperatures?(the pupa will lie longer)?

06.08.2008 17:58, RippeR

We are constantly sent to the company pupae of the tropics from the Philippines, and they have a much shorter development cycle.

07.08.2008 20:33, Raptor

Cool!so they can daichi? Is this like a banderolue?

07.08.2008 21:01, RippeR

exactly!

08.08.2008 15:01, Raptor

Today at the post office uznoval, delivery time to Moscow is less than two weeks!ravda the cost is rather big.500 rubles is normal for banderol?what about the import and export of insects across the border?

08.08.2008 15:02, Raptor

I hope I will not be scolded that I have spread a somewhat inappropriate topic here.best regards to all

09.08.2008 3:25, RippeR

it all depends on how much the parcel weighs.. I sent it to Israel, the colo weighed 150 g. Cost a colo of 200-250 rubles

09.08.2008 12:54, DIMID

For such a case, you can give 1000 rubles, if it is worth it.The most important thing is to get a high-quality ride(A miser pays twice)

09.08.2008 20:45, Raptor

I have an exact price for it on the example of a pack of sigoret uznoval.here it is to deliver somewhere 400 rubles will be.And for my money 2000 with an average salary of 40,000.So I say that it is necessary to send something so that it is not blind.I totally agree with DIMID.

09.08.2008 20:47, Raptor

Then the question is, how much is 1 cocoon of greater Saturnia worth???can you attach skok?

09.08.2008 20:58, DIMID

Five lei can, is it too much or too little for you lol.gif lol.gif

10.08.2008 20:31, Raptor

Five lei can -???apparently I'm not strong in languages,What does this mean?

Is the windowsill the farthest corner?
But seriously , I haven't seen your windowsill or your blinds. Suddenly, your window looks out on the south side and the blinds get very hot, or maybe rays of light break through them, or maybe someone opens the blinds... Therefore, I can only say in absentia-put it away from the window, deep into the room. And also-the kitchen, this is a place where they cook, cook, fry, bake, which means potentially-heat, smoke, steam - I don't think that the kitchen is a good place to store pupae.

Well, maybe not the farthest...
Would it be better in an air-conditioned room??? The blinds do not heat up, the window is plastic, in the evening I open it and ventilate it. In the kitchen, when cooking, the hood works... Although, you're probably right, I'll put it in a box and take it to the room )))

DIMID-apparently we still speak different languages. It's a pity.I'm Russian, and nekak can't understand what it'sconfused.gif about the question seems normal, how much and how much.

Guys!!! Friends!!!
Help me!!!
My Saturnia is in the refrigerator, as I was advised. Just over a month left before the" birth " of a beautiful creature...
I weighed it a month ago, and earlier, too-weighed 7 grams. A few days ago on the scale - 4 grams!!! Is that all she's done, dead? Is it dry? Won't I be a butterfly breeder? weep.gif

Whether she died or not, I don't know... Let's hope for the best.
But at the expense of the butterfly breeder-even if the pupae sometimes die, this does not mean that it is a matter of improper care. Some dropout of pupae always happens. Therefore, the more caterpillars are initially taken, the more likely it is to see a butterfly.

Thank you for your support!!!
But still, is it normal that she "lost weight"? Or is it a warning sign? And did I make the mistake of storing it in the refrigerator?

I don't know about losing weight.
At the expense of the refrigerator - if you are going to prick it, then you can get out and wait for the butterfly. If you are going to let go, then you need to observe such a temperature regime so that the butterfly comes out when it is supposed to. Personally, in such cases, I put the pupae on the balcony (in the shaded part), the butterflies come out when they are supposed to and fly away.

I want to release!!!!
So now you can put it on the balcony? We are now somewhere around 10 degrees in the afternoon, +8 +9. Will this temperature work?

Of course, it will work, but naturally, if this is a normal, and not a glazed balcony. The glazed balcony is like a greenhouse. The butterfly will probably come out early on it.
I have all the pupae on the balcony wintered.

We have a glazed...
But I would say it's not hot at all! And if you keep the windows open?
And what is the best way to keep the pupa so that it comes out normally, in the sense of capacity: a box, an aquarium, a jar (everything is natural with a twig)?

22.03.2009 15:07, taler

Carton box

22.03.2009 19:31, solnyshko a

Cardboard Box

Thanks! )))
And apparently a big one?

14.04.2009 11:27, solnyshko a

Please tell me, dear forumchane!
Is it time to put the Saturnia pupa in a box with twigs?
And whether it is necessary to do something with her cocoon - it is so dense! Will she come out of it or not?

Thank you in advance)))

14.04.2009 12:39, taler

Yes, it's about time.Don't worry about the cocoon-it will release the enzyme and dissolve it.

Thank you very much!
You reassured me )))

Can you tell me if you need to put something on the bottom of the box? Grass, moss, leaves, or something else?
