Good day to all, ladies and gentlemen. Another day off did not pass for us in vain. Despite the fact that the weather frowned unfriendly from the very morning, we went with the highly respected Chegar to the village of Kapriyany, which we loved. In the afternoon, heavy rain began to fall and we had no choice but to continue our journey in silence. Good weather doesn't bother us. smile.gif We are watching...

Cucullia night 3.05. Ukraine, near Zaporozhye.
from 22.00 to 24.00 Cucullia gozmanyi from 0.30 to 02.00 Cucullia verbasci (as an exception-one C. gozmanyi, apparently flew in and sat next to it). The behavior is also different, C. gozmanyi jump on the ground and are much calmer, C. verbasci fall from the sky and run around like crazy smile.gif

Alexander, and what do you have bavius begins to fly when the sagging sage has just thrown out inflorescences and is not yet blooming?? Does it fly away from the places where sage grows and how long does it last for years??

Very cool!
By the time of summer, I have the same observations. C. gozmanyi can come at 20:00, and verbasci fly en masse from one o'clock in the morning to about two.

Oleg, we have much more places where sage drooping grows than places where there is bavius, the last decade it has become very rare in our country, but last year, several populations with normal numbers were found lower along the Dnieper in the Kherson region. In terms of phenology, it really takes off when the sage is just beginning to throw out arrows, on average, at the very beginning of May, it does not fly for long, they say there is a second generation, but I have never seen it. and in collections, too.

Well, sage drooping, as I notice, begins to bloom from the upper flowers. On the day when my last report was posted, April 27, there were few such plants, but there were some.

Butterflies do not fly very far from their growing places. They can definitely fly 10 meters away, but I can't say any further, I didn't see it.

How long years last is the most interesting question. Last year I met a butterfly when I was in the steppe on May 4 and 7, but when I was on April 20 and May 18, I didn't see it.
This year, April 27, May 1-I saw little in another beam. I also saw it yesterday, and a lot of it. But there was also a lot of sage oak (Salvia nemorosa), drooping less at times.
I think it lasts about 2-3 weeks, but not for long.

I met a fresh butterfly on May 30, simultaneously with adult caterpillars. Then I had these caterpillars pupated and one butterfly came out in the summer. I assume that in nature this species has a partial, very small second generation.

I just had an idea about the second generation. The species begins to fly approximately when the sage begins to bloom.

And then I remembered that I saw a flowering sage (oak) in early October last year, 04.10.2013 near the Ingulets River near Sadovo village. But it was very cold then.

Good year to all. My first real outing in the country was badly damaged. But now there is some peak of diversity in nature, in principle, many new and interesting beetles were caught, and if it were not for the rain... The first half of the expedition turned out to be quite productive - I always lagged behind Sasha, braking at each suitable bush (shaking it out), and the main one on the Capriyans moved forward. I had to call several times to avoid getting lost at all. When did he catch anything else? The second half turned into a three-hour drive through the mud-soaked roads of the glades, but I still shook it out, lagging behind and only looking to make sure that this walking excavator did not completely dissolve in the jets. It was at this last stage that the stone nutcracker Megapenthes lugens was removed from a wild field of stone nutcrackers. I like him a lot in some ways.
Otiorhynchus multipunctatus rained down from everything that hung down to the trail all the way, with hawthorn and some other flowering bushes-Hoplia philanthus, and a couple of Hoplia praticola. These were brought home and spread out without damaging the golden scales. I did not find such beauty on the Internet, the spray pattern of both beetles is different, but absolutely incomparable.
In general, hawthorn was rich in pleasant surprises. A couple of pieces were found barbels Anaglyptus mysticus, Molorchus minor, Callimus angulatus, Cortodera humeralis, Anoplodera rufipes and some other small black barbels, on which the hand is not raised yet. As well as Limonius minutus (and other nutcrackers), three species of cantharids new to me - Cantharis nigricans, Rhagonycha lignosa and R. nigriventris. Plus the little things of Deporaus betulae, just a cool Ptinus variegatus and another seemingly unnamed ptinid. There are several types of aphodia in cow cakes, among them small ones with red spots on the ends of the elytra and Ataenius gracilis, which is close to aphodia. As well as onthophagus, including Onthophagus vacca and the second O. semicornis in my practice.
I think reading all this is not as interesting as looking at photos. I will add that when we were already approaching Kozhushna (15 km from Capriyan), Sphenophorus abbreviatus crawled out towards us, breaking bushes.

Here's another thing, I forgot. Ontholestes murinus was caught in cow dung with such a hind left leg: from an unnaturally thickened knee grow two full-fledged shins, and on one of them - two legs. He didn't run very well, so he got caught.

baviuses, before nogels for a week fly out, and in the Kherson region nogels in all already flew on April 25-26, so bavius took off in the middle of April, and already ends its years. sometimes the nogels disappear at the end of May. and there are if the cold spring fly until the second decade of June. then Bavius can survive until June. smile.gif

It's clear, I just mean that the "sign" is not true, here ksttai is today's picture, although poor Bavius is slightly eaten there, but everyone else is quite in shape and will fly for a long time)))
Well, maybe when the sage completely fades, then yes..

So there are still nogels in the Kherson region? And I was thinking of going to look for them from the middle of May, but they turned out to have already flown away...

No, they haven't flown away yet, but I've seen them upstream, in the gullies that overlook the Kakhovka reservoir, from the border with the Dnipropetrovsk region and almost to the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. surely there are almost all, just need to look for where there is a forage plant, there are two of them pontic astragalus and woolly-flowered. but by the end of May they will definitely depart
