But you didn't guess - in Penza it is now + 22 C outside the window... every day it rains torrentiously... In the evening, the temperature is naturally even lower, not a damn thing flies at night... We went to the border with the Saratov region under Bekovo - south of the sun, over the region of clouds, thunder and lightning... soaked to the skin with all the capes, tropical rains...

At night in St. Petersburg there was a thunderstorm, everything was shaking, and the rain was not very heavy. Wet of course, but everything is already dry. Not refreshing at all. Absolute calm, hot and stuffy. The trees stand as if they are not alive. When I was in the woods, I didn't even hear any sounds. Silence... absolute value. Insects flew 10 times less than a week ago. Red trifle-as licked (I mean something like M. athalia or C. selene.)
A few medium-sized mother-of-pearl birds, such as A. aglaja and small pigeons Plebejus fly on the heather. I saw a couple of A. damon females. Porcini mushrooms are already growing right on the sand ! Boletus mushrooms are all overgrown and fall at the touch, but there are a lot of ordinary white ones, as well as other mushrooms.

I just wrote that it wasn't particularly wet, a storm came with a terrible wind, hail from hazelnuts and a downpour. They showed it on TV. The house was in the very center, I thought the glass wouldn't hold. I sat behind them, like in an aquarium, so it flowed on the glass. And at the same time there was a strong thunderstorm. The cat huddled at her feet and looked up in fright. I've never seen anything like it !

Do you remember that in the Leningrad region A. damon was preserved only in one place in the south of the region or has something changed?
Are you familiar with the work of:
Fridolin V. Yu., 1935. Significance of relief elements as oases-shelters of relict fauna in the Gulf of Finland basin, Khibiny Mountains and Central Karelia // Proc. of the First All-Union Geographical Congress, Moscow: 3, pp. 1-14.
Have there been many changes in the insect faunistics of the region since then?

A. damon is preserved in one place in the south of the Leningrad region. Getting there now for a number of reasons is very difficult.
If my friend wants to, he will answer, and I will tell you what. Changes in the lepidopteran fauna of the megalopolis and the region have occurred large even in my lifetime, and not for the better. It is not necessary to compare it with Fridolin's work, just take the article by A. M. Diakonov (who constantly refers to Fridolin) - "Lepidoptera of the Leningrad region" from the Proceedings of the Leningrad Society of Naturalists, 1968. It also takes into account the observations of the 50s, which is much later than Fridolin. Very many of the mace species listed there are actually absent at the present time. Despite the fact that we conduct observations regularly and over a larger area than indicated in the works of scientists of the 19th-20th centuries. It is impossible to describe these changes here for a long time. For information on insect faunistics in the Leningrad region as a whole, please contact ZIN.

The weather burns, while the small ones were fluttering in the river, the folder, holding a strange pipe with bubbling water in his teeth, crawled along the bank, watering the sand like a censer, with a small bottle for large tests, and washed the same sand with a sieve ))

I think many people here will be interested in the work of A. M. Dyakov (1968)

No. I once had an excerpt on the bulavousys scanned and printed out a long time ago. Maybe someone has, I don't know.

A slightly late report...
Kaluga region, Dvortsy village, 15-17. 07. 16
I managed to go fishing in a good place in good weather. During the day, there was nothing interesting, except for one view. Unexpectedly, I found a huge population of Melanargia russiae there! I didn't think it had spread so far west here, and in such large numbers. Dozens of butterflies flew in the fields near the village, most of which, however, were already very battered by that time, so we had to take only one of 5-7 specimens. At the same time, it was possible to observe up to 10-15 butterflies fluttering over the flowers and rushing around the field. Unfortunately, nothing else was found during the day...
At night, the weather was good, only on the third night I had to finish early because of an impending thunderstorm. A lot of interesting scoops and moths arrived, many of which turned out to be new to me. It is worth noting that almost all rare species did not arrive in a single copy, there was plenty to choose from. Sometimes there were so many butterflies that they were already sitting on top of each other (see the last photo).

Where do you go??? On July 25, I was in Lembolovo. Diptera and stinging hymenoptera are abundant. Thickets of flowering Cirsium arvensis and Centaurea scabiosa buzz with swarms of insects. The collected material is still not sorted out.

Yes, and all sorts of daytime butterflies, too, pretty-anguloptera, burdock, admirals, Araschnia levana, a bunch of all sorts of shashechnits-mother-of-pearl, some small things...
I don't like butterflies, but there were so many of them and they were so actively climbing into the net that I almost caught a couple....

Alexey, my friend has run out of Internet, so I'll answer. The Luzhsky district and the Karelian Isthmus are the exact opposite in every sense. Under the Meadow where he walks, everything flies off earlier. Biotopes are also very different. The weather in one day in these places can be diametrically opposite. So I understand what he is writing about.

July 30, the outskirts of Oryol.
Hike along the railway to Bryansk.
Two weeks ago, Sappho flew out, and today there are even more of them! On the edges of the forest there are whole circles of
several males, and large females are found in shady places along with egeria. I don't remember this number, we usually met alone.
Where cottages border the forest belt, fresh birch marshmallows fly at an unattainable height, but alas, they did not manage to catch them. In balochka, myrmidon has significantly increased, there are pigeons Osiris and Thersites, Icarus of the second generation, and Galatea survivors of heavy rains still fly.

Well, take a trip to the Karelian Isthmus at the end of July. And it will be you right now smile.gif

Atkarsky district, okr S. Peschanka Street, 30. VII. 16

We drove yesterday with a friend to the Gerbil and the Mokhovaya Forest tract. We trod a good route (on the map, the red line is the way "there", and the blue line is the way "back").
Nothing significantly new was caught, so only poked around in rotten birch trees, there were Upis ceramboides blackbirds and their larvae, a few Prionus coriarius, subcutaneous carapaces, a couple of staphylinids and micro-scidmenids. Of the elephants, only one Glocianus was caught, and even then apparently some trivial one...

By the way, we decided to name the birch forest in the second photo after Nikolai Rastorguev smile.gif

Oh Lee... I know Karelian as well as flaky. There are zero good butterflies there. Unless some"night" accidentally pops up. And here it is: "uglokrylnitsy, burdock, admirals, Araschnia levana, a bunch of all sorts of shashechnits-mother-of-pearl" - flies and near the city. For example, in Pesochnaya, where I now go for a walk and where, by the way, there are a lot of "bees" smile.gif- this clearing is visible from the train at the entrance to Pesochnaya. I recommend visiting beer.gif
I've been to Lembolovo quite often. A good mushroom place, no more. Only a hurricane in the forest trees were felled, it is now difficult to walk there.

Hello everybody! Thanks to fraudatrix, I totally agree ! And why do I need eardrums and c-white from Karelian ? I'd rather suffer in the south (without the Internet).

Hello Penzyak ! Dissertation on "Changing the faunistics of insects in the Leningrad region" is not yet ready. The changes are big and happening fast ! Fortunately, they did not touch the species A. damon. It and the surrounding species are sitting in their relief form in the south of the region tightly and are not going to change, which is good. What can not be said about the numerous (!) newly discovered species and species that have passed into a depressed state or have gone below the detection threshold. I was in another area, also in the southern part, collecting mostly at night. But the photos, unfortunately, are not special, there is nothing special to show. With respect and best wishes !

Yesterday we took a bus to the village of Radishchevo, Novoburassky district. From there, we walked directly along the Chardym River to Tarkhany station, where we took an electric train and returned home. In total, they tramped about 9.5 km, most of them along the river. Unfortunately, I was only able to take one picture, then the battery died... I didn't catch much, although I did catch a couple of Pseudorchestes ermischi; the rest was the result of digging in the mud on the bank of the Chardym River.

September 11, the outskirts of Oryol.
Walk to a vacant lot to catch Lemonia dumi. There are a lot of them here, but I've only seen them in flight before. This time I didn't even see it, they probably didn't fly out. In previous seasons, we flew at the end of September. It's as warm as summer, and there are a lot of insects-eardrums, flies, and praying mantises flutter
everywhere. Spiders have a big harvest. Swallowtails, thistles, and rapeseed whiteflies are fresh. Jaundice only hiale, the third generation mixed with the newcomers of the fourth. In this field, at the end of summer, there are sometimes crocuses, but not this season.

Memories of hot and dry August 2016.
In this rainy, truly autumnal season, it's nice to think back to the beautiful summer. August was remembered for its hot and dry weather and many contrasts.

First of all, I was surprised by the contrast of the weather compared to the relatively close one (less than 400 km) Moscow. You learn about the next precipitation records in Moscow and are surprised by the almost complete absence of rain in our country (during the whole month).

The contrast between the weather forecast on popular Internet portals and reality was striking. Yandex was particularly notable for its mistakes - it predicts heavy rain for tomorrow afternoon. You wake up tomorrow morning - the sun is shining, you need to decide where you can go: if the weather is good, you can go to distant places, otherwise you need to focus only on the nearest surroundings. You open the Yandex forecast again, and again you see "heavy rain this afternoon". As a result, the whole day is sunny without a single drop of rain, only a couple of clouds in the afternoon. Not far behind in lies and Gismeteo.ru, the local weather station also sinned.

Just like every year, I was amused by the August contrasts in the number of butterflies in different biotopes. You enter a beautiful pine forest with broom bushes, glades of richly blooming heather and hawks - not a single butterfly, even if you cry. Once an hour, a white turnip flies by, sits down on a flower for a second, and rushes somewhere. Where are the argus trees on the heather, where are the myrmidons, the lichens that were plentiful last year? If you go down to the ravine, it will be more interesting there - various pigeons, nymphalids, and yellowheads. And you will come out to the alfalfa field-your eyes run away, in addition to hundreds of nymphalids and yolks, there are a lot of whiteflies and shovels, there are also moths.

It was interesting to see old, sometimes quite decrepit butterflies of past generations flying together, and quite fresh ones of the same species. Young individuals of some species, such as Limenitis camilla, were so cautious and agile in the heat that it was impossible to approach them within a reasonable time at the distance of a normal picture. In general, there were all sorts of things, including rare decent-looking individuals of some species (Polyommatus daphnis), whose age in the mass ended a month ago. Xanthomelae and cotton scoops, which were very numerous 3-4 years ago, were practically absent.

Follow the link below for a selection of August photos. In addition to lepidoptera, some other insects, spiders, birds and plants were captured, and it was impossible to pass them by indifferently.
A big request to the experts who will take the time to look at the selection, correct me with incorrect definitions and identify the types that I could not.

Embarrassment report!
I collect beetles and butterflies, mostly at home (in Tambov ) and in Lipetsk regions. Sometimes I go to the Caucasus.
In May, not without difficulty, I got myself a vacation for 28 days. During this time, I became an expert in admiring the rain, because May-June we had continuous rains. 2 fucking months of rain! shallow, shallow with bubbles, strong, strong with wind, medium with bubbles.... mad.gif finally, the rains ended, as did the vacation, and summer beganweep.gif+35 +37 +40! and so for another two monthsweep.gif, everything that wasn't washed away dried up. after this infernal inferno, I really wanted katokal, autumn spades and a scoop, but +8 +10 cooled down all the gusts wall.gif
I turned on the AGV, sit admiring the fine rain with the wind and spit poison in Moscow reports (nothing personal) shuffle.gif

Have you had a slice of summer? We can congratulate you! In the Leningrad region, "summer" is recognized as the rainiest in the entire history of observations. September is drier, but the temperature is already pure autumn.

As such, the "Indian summer" in the European part will no longer be. There will be a short-term warming from about September 30th to October 5th, but with cloudy weather and light rain, I myself plan a last sortie at this time. And relatively clear weather will be established after October 10-12, but already with daytime no more than 10 and night less than 3-5 frown.gif.

Humidity and heat are not always antonyms. In Moscow, last August was the second wettest month in history (out of all months, not just August), but it was quite warm, with only one strong cooling for 5 days in the middle of the month, and 75% of precipitation fell on three days out of the entire month, 50% - on August 15.

The first month of autumn was ending.
The idea of human sacrifice for good weather seemed less and less wild...

Memories of hot and dry August 2016.
A big request to the experts who will take the time to look at the selection, correct me with incorrect definitions and identify the types that I could not.

Indian summer has begun, +21. Lower Don river( swamp) Kagalnik. The banks are clay cliffs and reeds overgrown with geraniums. Between the cliffs and reeds 5-10 m of withered burnt vegetation, on which life was boiling.

Boris Vitalievich - why is Corydon introduced in the Don Delta?? Why do you need to move it anywhere at all?
The only thing that I observed in nature is how male corydons literally "fucked" female damons in our area in one protected area, as a result of which they were declared genocide and in a couple of hours more than 200 specimens of males were caught and fed to ants...

The ground beetle in the photo is a pterostichus, like elongatus, common in the south.
Maybe aterrimus, though. But not blethys exactly.

Because he used to live on the parallel of Rostov and to the north - on the parallel of Kamensk. But over the past 10 years, it has disappeared, apparently extinct. Sometimes only hybrids come across, and no longer F1. Now it can be found only 250 km to the north, so it is an attempt at reintroduction.

And who can tell you what time of night P. populi flies?

Males start at late dusk, while females arrive later, after 21.00.This is in November and in Kiev.
