Thanks! = ) And when will they turn into butterflies? This year, or will they have to spend the winter with me?

23.08.2008 22:51, Бабочник

it depends on the length of daylight. about strelchatku finally do not know - not particularly interested (search engines-steer)...... read I'm here somewhere near gave a brief breeding techniques (there and about wintering is)....and a bunch of links......

24.08.2008 9:58, okoem

the light probably interfered with her, because it's night outside, and the lamp is shining on her. But what should strelchatka be fed with? Any leaves?

You shone a lamp on it, so it crawled towards the light. This happens sometimes in caterpillars.
And you found the arrow on the cherry tree, didn't you? So cherries and feed.
If you live in the south, it is possible that strelchatka will be released this year. If in the north, it will pupate and spend the winter.
Cabbage patch should be released this year.

24.08.2008 11:14, guest: Евгения

Babochnik, okoem, thank you so much for your advice))
I noticed that they were sleeping upright on the sides of the box. Do they need sticks to climb on?
I found a strelchatka on a cherry tree, I will feed it with cherries) I live in Moscow) This is still not the north and not the south)))

24.08.2008 13:33, okoem

Do they need sticks to climb on?

Cabbage except for cabbage, in general, you don't need anything. But put a few cherry twigs with leaves on the sagittarius, it will climb and feed on them, and most importantly, it needs twigs to then make a cocoon between the leaves on them and pupate. I bred this caterpillar, it pupated between the leaves.
While it crawls and feeds, constantly change the twigs to fresh ones, and when you notice that you have started to weave a cocoon, do not touch or disturb the twigs.

24.08.2008 13:37, guest: Евгения

Understood) And the cabbage patch will not attach its cocoon to anything?

24.08.2008 14:51, guest: Евгения

Help! The strelchatka caterpillar almost does not move and refuses to eat mountain ash, but it did not weave any cocoons and did not climb on a stick. Just lies on the bottom and that's it. In the morning everything was fine, and now like this... (However, I put her a piece of cabbage in the morning, because so far there were no her favorite plants. She crawled on the cabbage and since then almost does not move (((With difficulty moved it to the mountain ash...
What should I do? Help...

Yevgenia, send me your email and I'll send you breeding materials......if necessary

Oh, I found it on a sandy road, crawling somewhere.
Another question, the caterpillar of the wine hawk moth made a rookery or something pordobnoe gluing the edges of the leaves of ivan tea. Why, maybe pupating?

24.08.2008 20:10, Vabrus

The wine hawk moth was about to pupate. Due to the lack of soil in the cage in which it needs to dig, it had to pupate between the leaves.

And how long is it now not to disturb him? When will the pupa be born?

24.08.2008 20:35, Vabrus

For a week. Then in the refrigerator, etc. Look, here it was discussed a lot wink.gif

Vabrus, well, about the refrigerator in a week it's you who got excitedrolleyes.gif, I think let it stand on the balcony somewhere (just not where the sun is falling!and in the shade..), but when the first negative temperatures are outside, then in the refrigerator.(for example, I live in Moscow and usually put it somewhere in October)

That is a week in its place in the room and then go outside before the frost? Then the refrigerator. When can I take it out of the refrigerator?

24.08.2008 21:21, Kid

andros if there is no minus sign, put it on the balcony right now. A week ago, I found exactly the same caterpillar. It has pupated and is now standing on the balcony in the shade. So it's fine. But it would be better if it was pupated in the ground. I usually keep the caterpillars for 3 months in the refrigerator, then pull out the cherished imago in a week. But they all pupated in the ground.

24.08.2008 21:30, andros

But now it's probably too late, can't you put the ground down already? Will it appear in the leaves?

24.08.2008 21:39, Vabrus

Vabrus, well, about the refrigerator in a week is you overreacted rolleyes.gif

I'm sorry, I put it a little wrong. It was meant that the caterpillar should not be disturbed for a week. And the refrigerator-later, after a while. I thought that was clear shuffle.gif

andros: I think it will also overwinter in the leaves.

Vinny was transported to the street, (although it's warm there) poplars are still grazing themselves .

24.08.2008 22:05, okoem

Guys! andros!
there is a separate topic about breeding butterflies from caterpillars, where all this has already been discussed.

Why repeat yourself?

And the wine hawk moth is quite unkillable... You can put it in the refrigerator a week or two after pupation and it will lie there without problems until spring. It is only important to keep the soil (sphagnum or sawdust) slightly moist.

25.08.2008 23:20, MURRR

Hello. I decided to start breeding butterflies from pupae. Please tell me what size insectarium is better to order? Do I need lighting lamps and which ones are better to choose? Thank you.

26.08.2008 11:55, Tyomochkin

It depends on what kind of butterflies and in what quantities! I don't think so long... My kaya is not very good with her head because of these lamps... Butterflies come out day and night...

27.08.2008 18:15, andros

Question: the poplar caterpillar is slightly icy, does it want to pupate? Does it need soil?

28.08.2008 6:25, Мих

Brought out in the Crimea from the caterpillar filed a complaint. very beautiful butterfly. he also released it there - he didn't want to eat too much.
I've been looking for a bindweed hawk moth for a long time - at night with a lantern. He has such bright reflective orange eyes! One caught, but at night he escaped..
I found a pupa, brought out a very thick white butterfly (it looks like a sagittarius).
After 3 days, a male joined her, matured. Then she made a nest out of her own down, scraping it off her belly with her hind legs, and sort of flew there - I didn't see any eggs. successfully died. I brought the nest with me - what to do with it next, and what it generally means( I didn't know before that butterflies build nests!)
I'll post the photos later. thank you in advance.

All hawkmoth need soil!

You don't have to go out at night. Go out in the evening, while it is still light in the park, where there are flower beds with petunias - there are dozens of them flying around.
The thick white butterfly is probably an unpaired silkworm (Lymantria dispar). Was the male dark?
A "nest" is not a nest, but a clutch of eggs. In the spring, caterpillars will come out of them.

I'm terribly sorry if I repeat myself.
The caterpillar was going to pupate.
If this topic has already mentioned it, then just write the name of the caterpillar.

It was said, and more than once. This is the caterpillar of the wine hawk moth Deilephila elpenor. It seems that this year this species has given an outbreak of reproduction, because for the last month many people have been asking what kind of caterpillar it is and how to breed it. So you are far from the first person to ask this question (the definition of caterpillars is in the next topic).

This is an unpaired silkworm. Malicious mass pest. His geese will eat almost anything.

Dear SIL, I think that you are not dealing with some Papilio palinurus, so let your butterfly go on all four sides, it will find a place to winter and successfully overwinter.

Tell me, does the poplar hawk moth release a brownish liquid when pupating?
(I meet this for the first time)
