Yesterday, in the steppe gulch, I did see two white whiteflies, one of them was definitely Pontia edusa. In general, there are not many flowers there, so there are not enough butterflies.

Hurray! Opened the season and immediately a new look!
In the Rose Valley Park, a long open-air wood warehouse was formed. It was after last year's April windbreak that the park officials brought all the wood to one place. We expected to sell it, that's for sure, but for some reason it didn't work out. Two logs of wood were formed, not less than a hundred meters long, one and a half meters wide and a man's head high. height. Plus shapeless piles of stumps, scraps, and other chunks. And here I am with my jars and unkind scientific intentions smile.gif
In short, by May-June, this place promises to become a real treasure island. In the meantime, the actual tree phages are very large Scolytidae, 7-8 mm. under the bark of pine logs. I have never caught or met such people in Moldova. There are similar ones from the Omsk region, which I identified as Ips sexdentatus, but it seems to me that the Moldovan ones have a more elongated pronotum and a slightly different punctuation of the elytra. Although the teeth on the wheelbarrow seem to be the same. I'll have to think again.
And the main find was also from Scolytidae. Bugs are small, of course, but that's what I like. I saw three copies, caught two, and managed to extract only one from the jar. Three times I stirred the shavings - no, one infection was lost. Which was especially disappointing, because it seemed to me that the surface of the elytra was damaged. Some kind of chaotic pattern, an unsymmetrical loss of scales, or something. And yet I tried to determine and found!!! It turned out to be Hylesinus varius. This is exactly how it should be. Here it is, the first new look of the new season! https://www.zin.ru/animalia/coleoptera/rus/hylvarkm.htm
So Hylesinus varius, Hylesinus fraxin, and Leperisinus fraxini are all synonyms?. Nowhere is it explicitly stated, but it seems so. confused.gif

All in search of Pavonia) Maybe it's still early, or maybe not, maybe I just don't have the patience to wait for the evening summer of males, but they weren't there until 16: 00. Today I ran through new places in the vicinity of the villages of Lyutarka and Kominy of the Izyaslovsky district.

I just didn't put it correctly, I kind of understand that males fly after lunch, but I don't understand exactly when they start flying, and at what time the peak of summer falls.

By the way, according to a colleague, his males also flew to the light.

15.04.2018 21:38, Alexandr Zhakov

In the Kherson region, males flew intensively in pisky from 13 to 17. On an unfertilized female, several flew in at dusk. Only females were born in five years

Last year, in Zhytomyr region, a male pavonia flew to the light of the DRL when it was already completely dark. And so I saw them there from about 16.00 to 18.00.They fly very fast and often change their flight path - it's hard to catch them.

I was today, 28.04.17, in the Kherson region in a gully in the west of the city of Berislav. All the traditional diurnal butterfly species fly at this time: chervonets plamennyi, baviy, Alexis, turnip, rutabaga, mignonette belyanka, polyxena, swallowtail, podaliriy, southern yellowfin (?), thick-headed Tages, tattered admiral, anglewing. Litostege griseata, bloody bear, and long-eared moth are also found during the day. There were no lemongrass plants, but most likely they flew during the day, and I arrived in the evening; also cabbage plants, but these "pests" are very rare. The draughtsmen, apparently, have not yet flown out, or have flown out in very small numbers. On the flowering apple trees in the peaks, I observed 2 feeding podaliris.

What about the weather and temperature there? smile.gif

29.04.2018 22:48, Wave Storm

vafdog, as for the temperature, I don't have a thermometer at home right now, so I can't say for sure. But early in the morning, the temperature is slightly higher or lower than 10 degrees, and in the afternoon it is higher than 20 degrees. It's cold in the morning in a T-shirt, but normal in the afternoon. I also went out today and even got burned. It hasn't rained for a long time. I remember there was a week of frosts in March, then maybe a couple of rains, and that's it. In April, there was no rain at all (small drops that dry up in 30 seconds. doesn't count).

And today, 29.04.18, I was on the Dnieper estuary, climbing just above the village of Aleksandrovka. This time I did meet a new butterfly for myself-this is Euchloe ausonia. Indeed, last time (2015) I did not pay attention to them. Ausonia is a smaller butterfly compared to other whiteflies, but it flaps its wings more often; along with it comes the first (spring) generation of Pontia Edusa, which is also small in size. In flight, the green dusting on the underside of the ausonia's wings is not visible at all: you can only see that the butterfly is slightly gray. By the way, I was able to distinguish it from edusa during the day only with the help of a net - the butterflies didn't land until about two o'clock in the afternoon, but even then I couldn't take a picture of them (but I took 3 pieces to learn how to distinguish them), because there was a wind from the estuary. By the way, Zorek ordinary did not see any of them. Ausonias are found on the estuary on steeps with more or less steppe vegetation, while in the depression on the shore near the village of Aleksandrovka with weeds on flowers only Edus. From other butterflies-many moth Litostedzh grisseata, also come across Aspitates ochrearia, sometimes came across golubyanka brown, baviy, jaundice alfakariensis, turnip, rutabaga, swallowtail, chervonets tersamon, scoop-gamma.

But I haven't seen any euphemisms.

Once on May 1, the heat wave hit us immediately in the afternoon. This evening I got out into the gully. Polyxene for 5 days has become less; it feels like they are flying. Swallowtails and podalirias fly by sometimes. Qingxia's checkers flew out. Zorka saw only one. Baviev and Alexis, as it seemed to me, less than usual. Very hot even at 6 pm. I remember the 15th year and how on May 18, butterflies gathered on flowers at 5 o'clock and calmed down, but now they calm down closer to 7 pm.

I came across a new butterfly, which I not only did not expect, but also did not really want to see. A whitefly or a white moth flew out of the grass. She sat down on the grass and folded her wings. I looked closely - but this is Trifiza Phryne! The butterfly is not shy, but it is inconvenient to remove it, because it, like some other marigolds, sits at the very bottom of the grass among dry and green stems. While I was still walking among the low grasses, I met another Phryne. I think if you walk for a long time, you can find more. I also noticed that she doesn't like the shade very much, she tries to stay in the sun.

It turns out, the first find on the Right Bank of Ukraine! It is also interesting that you have repeatedly visited this gully, but you have not found Phryne before. Perhaps it was very local there, or maybe it is a new population and the species is expanding its range?

05.05.2018 0:00, Vlad Proklov

The first one is Kuyuk-Tuk Island in Siwash, but I can't tell you about the second one yet: the find is not mine, publication is expected by the end of the year.

Thanks! It would be great if a synopsis of the fate of this species in Ukraine was compiled - including the discovery of Wave Storm.

In general, it is a surprisingly southern species (like its satellite Proterebia afra): in the Bashkir Pre-Urals, it is already found almost at the latitude of Moscow!

What a drought we have! Although, in the summer it will be worse, and the grass is now green in the steppe, but just today I saw giant scolias. They usually appear at the end of May. And the acacia is now blooming along with the chestnuts. But at least there were some clouds today. Maybe something will happen next week.

Last Sunday (29.04) I again searched for Pavonia, Slavutsky district, the vicinity of the village of Romaniny to no avail. About 20 species of diaries were found, a female Diaphora mendica, Euclidia mi, a new Hypoxystis pluviaria, and several other common geometrids.

Today, 6.05 am, the neighborhood of Slavuta. Having decided that I definitely wouldn't have to run after Pavonia, I finally took a camera with me, so I got this photo essay.

Here I have, in the vicinity of Slavuta, come across single specimens, although earlier, at the beginning of the two thousandth, in the same localities there was a fairly common species. But Orion disappeared completely, I haven't seen it for more than 10 years. In the south of the region, both types are common, at least they were, I haven't visited there in the last 5 years.

No, a classic agestis, with full rows of well-developed orange holes on top of both wings. In recent years, it has become quite common here.

28.06.18 I was in the vicinity of the village of Solontsy in the Kherson region. There was no such abundance of butterflies as I saw on 10.07.15, but all the local attractions were collected. First of all, I was interested in the fat-headed Morpheus. It was there, and not in a single copy, but for 2.5 hours of walking around them, I never managed to photograph it. The butterfly, like other thickheads, is small and does not fly fast in what I would call a "jumping sinusoidal" flight. Morpheus flew out of the thickets that were in the shade into a clearing lit by the sun, flew near the edge of the clearing and returned back to the shade. For all the time of my observation of them, one butterfly sat on the flower for 5 seconds, the other for 3 seconds. Then it was unbearable to be there, because there was practically no heat, stuffiness, or wind. Of the other interesting things for me, I saw 1 galatea, a couple of lemongrass (male and female), a decent number of Cupido alcetas pigeons. From other butterflies-Celastrina argiolus, Coenonympha pamphilus, Argynnis pandora, Iphiclides podalirius, Melitaea didyma, Melitaea trivia, Maniola jurtina (mass species), Colias crocea, Pieris rapae, Pieris brassicae, Carcharodus alceae (only one, and this is the only thick-headed bird besides morpheus, which were there), all sorts of motley birds Zygaena sp, Vanessa atalanta, Issoria lathonia. Also in the grass I noticed a dustpan called Drasteria caucasica.

Yes, it seems to be the usual size, although it is similar to the southern euphorbia with dark scales, they flew in an amount of up to 8 PCs closer to 12 at night and after.

All other images are milkweed. This is somewhat similar to the southern one, but it is taken from the top of the head and the wing pattern may be distorted. If the size is normal, then this one is just milkweed. smile.gif
