In Kharkiv and the region, it has been raining for the second week, and this has not happened in the last 5 years...The sun came out at lunchtime today.
22.IV.2015 NE Ukraine, Kharkov, Kominternovskiy distr., Kar`er lake. 49°56'15.54"N, 36°15'54.26"E.

Osmia males ?cornuta, rest when clouds cover the sun, feeding on Apricot and wild Violet flowers...Males are ten times more numerous than females. A female with two horns on her head that look like mandibles!
Mating of Staphylinus caesareus, came across under sheets of plastic, plywood and plastic bags...

And another tip. SamPavel, it is better to edit hymenoptera "like butterflies": that is, through tracing paper, and not piercing their wings with pins. Why do you need holes when you can do without them? confused.gif

Visited on Monday, 27.04, the Dnieper estuary between the village of Aleksandrovka and Stanislav. I wanted to find Zegris Euphema. But she didn't meet. Of the whiteflies, there were turnips, turnips, cabbage leaves, and both southern and saffron yolks. From other butterflies - field mother-of-pearl and the rest in the photo. Especially a lot of gray moth, which I have not yet identified. From the beetles, I noticed kravchikov and the new horse Calomera littoralis (these horses on the bank of the rampart).

In general, this year many butterflies will probably be later than usual. For example, Pseudophilotes bavius last year was already at this time. And this year, not only is it not there yet, but its forage plant - drooping sage-has not even released stems with flowers yet. Yes, and from other pigeons so far I have seen only Lycaena phlaeas and Celastrina argiolus.

Yesterday I decided to take a walk in the woods. Since in the last report (see post # URL # 3686) I was not able to describe my area in detail due to the lack of photos, let me fill in this gap.
To begin with, the forest is about a kilometer away from my house. In front of a huge mass of forest is a small isolated area with a width of about 30 m.
330_349_001.JPG

Houses huddle right in front of it.
330_349_003.JPG

Behind this isolated area is a dry meadow on sandy soil, overgrown with grass, approximately 1 km long and 60-70 m wide. The perfect place for horse racing! I often catch Cicindela campestris, C. soluta and C. hybrida here. Also flying here are various whiteflies (Leptidea sinapis, Pontia daplidice, Pieris napi, Pieris rapae and, of course, the ubiquitous Pieris brassicae), chervonets (yesterday I caught Lycaena phlaeas), mother-of-pearl (yesterday I caught two more unidentified specimens of the same species) and various hymenoptera, among which Xylocopa violacea should be noted (their names are also unknown). it flies about 6-8 pieces; it is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine and only flies for the south of the country, although I see them here, in the forest-steppe zone of the center of Ukraine eek.gif regularly every year).
330_349_005.JPG

330_349_007.JPG

290_329_297.JPG

And behind the meadow there is a huge natural forest area, in the west of which (I didn't go there yesterday) deciduous tree species predominate, among which there is more oak, and in the east (here, by the way, is the Second Ozyavina) - coniferous species, among which pine is the leader.
330_349_010.JPG

330_349_009.JPG
Sorry, but so far only nature photos. I have not yet learned how to photograph insects in their natural habitat. shuffle.gif

Here is a description of the area where I most often fish. And now about yesterday's walk. It lasted from eleven-thirty to two-thirty in the afternoon. The air temperature was +15..17 degrees, the sky is almost clear and, at first, the wind makes you worry, which later almost disappeared (in fact, on the third of May it rained all day, so in the morning the sky was covered with clouds, and the wind speed reached about 6 m / s). When I reached the dry meadow, as usual, I caught a few C. hybrida and C. soluta (C. campestris are rare here), one Lycaena alciphron (I came across two more on the way back), and the aforementioned mother-of-pearl. I also came across a fairly large (25 mm) bumblebee, with the definition of which I will ask for help. Entering the forest, I slightly deviated from the path that led to Ozyavina, and was surprised (this is only my first field season) to find a fairly extensive clearing overgrown with tall grass and some bushes, a photo of which I will post below. It was flying in this clearing...about a dozen fresh beautiful swallowtails (Papilio machaon)! I collected three specimens (personally, I don't need any more, given that this species is also listed in the Red Book of Ukraine and has the status "Vulnerable", and it is listed for no reason, like some other species, because in the past years I have met only a few specimens). This clearing turned out to be very rich in butterflies: in addition to swallowtails, I caught two more mother-of-pearl birds of different species, some moth, two females of Anthocharis cardamines (I already have five males and this is enough for me, all caught near the Second Lake), one each of Pieris rapae, Pieris napi and Leptidea sinapis (in general, yesterday there were very few whiteflies flying, I caught almost all of them that I saw, and there were no pigeons in sight). On the way to Ozeryavina, I came across two more kravchiks and two nutcrackers.
Since I did not describe this pond in detail in my previous report, I will do so now. The second Ozeryavina is an elongated oval, about 80 m long and about twenty wide. The eastern bank is steep, while the western bank is gentle. At half a meter from the shore, the depth does not exceed 30 cm, but then it drops to almost two meters. The beach itself is overgrown with sedge, reeds and cattails. Yesterday, the water temperature in Ozyavin was +15 degrees.
290_329_313.JPG

290_329_315.JPG

290_329_325.JPG
Hunting in the reservoir did not bring the expected results (apparently, all aquatic insects hid in the mud or went to the depths due to the rain; only water skaters roamed the surface). I caught only one male lemongrass (Gonepteryx rhamni) near the pond. Already in the village I came across a small mother-of-pearl (Boloria (Clossiana) dia).
Just like that, somehow. It's time to take stock. smile.gif About butterflies (especially swallowtails) I was pleased, although somewhat embarrassed by the lack of pigeons, but the catch of beetles was much better. In general, the walk was a success! jump.gif
Bumblebee on definition. Female Bombus terrestris?
350_352_001.JPG

A shrub that is plentiful in a dry meadow and clearing in the forest. I ask for help in determining. Shrub height 1-1. 5 m. Perhaps a plant from the Legume family (Fabaceae (Leguminosae, or Papilionaceae))? If so, maybe the Gorse tribes (Genisteae)?

I remembered an interesting meeting with xylocopts before last year's May games. On the road in pine plantations, someone put a piece of ceramic insulator from a nearby high-voltage line on a quarter pole. They turned it over, and there...

Vasily, a few "letter-eating" comments that may be of interest if you strive for the truth. smile.gif

chervontsy (yesterday I caught Lycaena alciphron, although according to Wikipedia, the butterfly's life begins only in mid-May),
Something very, very early. Maybe it's a different species after all?

Maybe it's X. valga? I am not at all an expert on them, but experts told me that, for example, only X. valga is reliably registered in the Kharkiv region, and all references to X. violacea are deceptions of workers... smile.gif

Leptidea sinapis
It should be borne in mind that it can also be L. juvernica. It can only be reliably determined by the genitals.

PS: Yes, and for our region it is mainstream to refer pontius to the species P. edusa. Although there are different opinions here, and some do not separate the edusa as an independent species, different from the dappledice.

05.05.2015 20:47, vasiliy-feoktistov

Vasily, for the record smile.gif
Even where there is a broom there is an interesting jaundice Colias myrmidone (Esper, 1781). In Russian, it is called "Yellow broom" and is available in Ukraine.
A barbel Deilus fugax (Olivier, 1790) here: http://molbiol.ru/forums/index.php?showtop...dpost&p=1484091 (then I mowed it directly from the broom).

It may be different, but at least the upper and lower surfaces of the wings are very similar to those of this species.
No, it's definitely X. violacea. I have one of its specimens caught last year in this place, so I can say this with confidence.
It may very well not be L. sinapis, but it is definitely someone very close to this species.
