Yesterday I went to the forest to sort out hornets ' nests. There were 10 tiers in the biggest nest! The rest have either 5 tiers or 3.When pulling the tiers out of the hollow, I found a large number of females, males, workers and they remained alive at a temperature of +1 degrees.

05.10.2013 15:46, vespa crabro

Today I went to the tree where the Vulgaris settled. It wasn't so easy to break it,but I pulled it out anyway.

Nests contained 7 tiers(5 workers,2 uterine), and half of the tiers rotted awayfrown.gif
+ there were a lot of dead worker wasps between the tiers,I also found 3 live females and 1 male, the females were marked in the wintering position(apparently they did not have time to fly out of the nest and stayed in it for the winter).

At home, I put the females and the male in a jar for a while, when they became more active, the male began to mate with the females smile.gif

Later, I will send the females to winter quarters(as well as my polistovs), and the male to the collection.

My temperature drops to -2 at night. Most of the nests are empty, like hornets and Germanic and vulgaris. There are 2 nests (Germanic and vulgaris), apparently very powerful colonies. Foraging like in summer there.
Males are also noted on leaves and just in flight. Naschet females-did not see any, except polistov. I wonder if you have noticed female hornets or vulgaris in nature in the fall ??? confused.gif They are very secretive..) Males fly with might and main, but their girlfriends are not theresmile.gif, Maybe they are already wintering somewhere. Frosts at night already.

We finally got warmer weather, and I went to check out one of the nests I found earlier, the one in the steppe. It turned out that the nest had died, and it had died quite a long time ago, the most recent one in August.
There was a lot of brood left in the honeycombs, there were no wasps, the honeycombs were all rotten, but they didn't stink anymore, everything had already been eaten clean by all sorts of animals, but it was clearly clear that the brood was dead.

vespa crabro, a rather important observation about mating!!! This means that they don't need to fly at all, like bees or ants, but simply put the males and females in a container. Although I would still catch males from other families smile.gif

Today I checked the nest in the ground, surprisingly, foraging in the nest is quite strong! Despite the fact that this morning it was approx. - 1C, in the afternoon not much higher than +10, wasps fly straight almost like a cage! True, very interseno take off, often ka kby warm up, flap their wings.
I see that this nest can be more or less safely dismantled in December, probably, and then the wasps will remain. In the balcony nest, there are also wasps and foraging, but sooo weak.

Today on a fishing trip I saw an actively foraging German wasp, and before that I had seen foraging wasps more than once, this is certainly not the most likely late incident, but nevertheless! Everything goes to the fact that we will have very long-lived nests of German wasps this season, this does not happen often.

and how long does 1 hornet(worker) live?

04.11.2013 22:34, Hierophis

Here you are, it seems that the question is not complicated, but in fact, how long do they all live? smile.gif
Neither polisty nor germaniki nor sharshni, I do not know how long they live.
You need to mark the first generation and observe...

Well, about 1.5 months smile.gif
Some live longer.

Hello. I found a hornet's nest the size of a good melon in a box on the balcony. I want to destroy the wasps and larvae, but keep the nest itself. What is the best way to do this?

Oh
, it's the end of November, and no one should be there anymore.
Where do you live?

Interestingly, what kind of os? Perhaps germanica or vulgaris? We now have frosts up to -3 have gone, female wasps have been sleeping for a long time. The photos would be interesting to see.
Who's interested-I posted several batches of photos yesterday - http://vespidae2012.narod.ru/updates.html

In the middle of last week I decided to visit one super nest Germanik, the temperature was approx. +10C, cloudy, windy, in general very sad..
I rode my bike to the nest, and there was a deserted entrance in the ground, and there was no activity near the nest... And of course, my patience couldn't stand it, despite the fact that I didn't take the shovel and bags, I decided to dig it out! And despite my experience, on the basis of which I knew that in such a nest there are necessarily wasps and there are not a few of them.
But there was no foraging, the cycle is clearly completed, all the male queens flew out...
I started digging, and then a few minutes later I hear a familiar buzzing sound!!! The wasp is back from foraging! Overcast, +10, gray, and she decided to make a departure! Well, then I already realized that it was a little early to start getting it out, at least last weekend it was necessary, and it's better on the next, but as a result of excavations, the top of the nest was already exposed, it was dumb to leave it, it could get wet with rain, someone could dig it up...

In general, I started to dig further..
AND THERE!!!!!
In general, while I will write the preliminary characteristics of the nest,
and I will note that the situation was just on the verge of bites, but it did not happen, but it would have been fun, the bite of Germanica in the 20s of Novembersmile.gif, but there were no bites, although a couple of times I had to run almost without looking back)))))
I must say that the wasps were very sluggish, their number in the nest was not small, maybe about 100, maybe more, but they crawled sluggishly and buzzed their wings for a long time - they warmed up, but almost all of them could not take off much, perhaps because carbohydrate nutrition was essentially absent.. Unfortunately, many of these wasps had to be killed, otherwise the nest would have been impossible to pull out...

Cells of the upper tiers were traditionally gnawed, more or less whole tiers began with 5-6 tiers.
I didn't see a single hatched male or queen in the nest, but I didn't see a few more tiers, because I had to take them with me because of the abundance of wasps in them.

The very first tier was about 14 cm in diameter, the depth of the pit in which the nest was located was 45 cm, the number of tiers of honeycombs was 12 developed tiers !!!! and a small uterine honeycomb, the number of uterine tiers - 6 developed honeycombs + 1 the same small uterine honeycomb with approx. 15 cells, perhaps its construction ended most likely after the start of the release of the first queens.
I can't write in more detail and more fully yet, the nest on the balcony was lying in a bag, I expect frosts so that I can sort it out, while we had until today, day and night, it was approx. +10C, but today it's already colder, approx. +5C now..

The photos were not very good, because it was overcast and frankly, dark, by 16 o'clock the sun is almost setting, I hate winterfrown.gif

Cool! A large nest turned out, after all, it is warmer in the Crimea and wasps still survive, at least in nests. We have no OS for a long time already, as I haven't marked anyone for 3 weeks, and at night it sometimes drops to -4... everyone was killed) The season is thus closed.. it remains to wait for the most interesting period for me - SPRING!!. I love to watch how the nests of the queens begin to be built)))
I will soon post a report on my observations for this year on my website... I think you will be interested).

28.11.2013 0:26, Hierophis

Roman Rakochy, yes, we have in the Crimea a little warmer than you have in the Alps lol.gif
Nothing, the taiga union is already close, soon everything will be swept away and there will be no spring wink.gif

And yes, the season has already come to an end, although in principle, if it is already over for the wasps, well, almost, I think that in such nests sometimes the wasps can still be alive for a long time, because the queens then overwinter...
So, for the wasps it ended, but for the nest itself and its honeycombs, everything is just beginning, there are so many larvae and other animals now, it feels like they are going to eat the nest all winter smile.gif

An interesting nest, judging by its color, was mainly built by V. vulgaris wasps, but judging by some wasps, there are also German ones, this happens if one of the several males covering the vulgaris uterus turns out to be German.

In general, this is very interesting, the reasons why vulgaris did not mix with Germanic ones, there are articles where such hybridization is shown.
In general, some kind of mathematical approach is needed here, it is quite difficult for wasps to reproduce, if the uterus of a vulgaris, for example, a purebred mated with a male German wasp, then first of all, it will definitely give birth to purebred male vulgaris, some part of purebred females and some hybrid ones, and information about whether there will be hybrid uterus reproductive I have not found yet..

Interseno is also that I sometimes found nests built according to the vulgaris type, in which the working individuals were all like a cross, the males were 100% vulgaris, but there were no uterine combs, although the nests were large.

And then by chance not a dude, given the length of the nails? )))))
"Well, the hornets are making a lot of people?" First of all, I have already made sure that public wasps are more peaceful than hornets, this applies not only to our crabs, but also to other species, I personally poked both my hand and head completely into a hollow with hornets, and I touched the shell wink.gifAnd also heard about other species, here you are, another example.
If it would be with Germanics to do this-oto yes wink.gif

Ta well, it's overgrown some, there are still normal hornets in the video))) There's a dukalis in the video, and you can see a tangerine on your hand)
By the way, it turns out that hornet venom is still not so slightly toxic, at the level of bee venom, but nevertheless) A bunch of bees stung me right away and nothing happened.

Thank you for joining the ranks jump.gifAnd I think spring has already come, the snow has almost completely melted smile.gif

We don't have any snow either. The average temperature is +8. I think spring will be early, and the wasps will come out in mid-March here)
