EVGEND: did the Carabus hit the traps?

Yes, there were a few carabuses, I think there were 4 types, including a hefty tribax. But I gave them all to I. A. Solodovnikov, and in the future I was not interested in their species identity. He appears on the forum, it is better to check with him directly.

In the Krasnodar Region, it is also known only from the northern macroslope of the Greater Caucasus. I haven't heard of anyone catching it in Sochy.

If you are talking about Hyles vespertilio, then the first time I caught it was in 2007, 25-30 km from Sochi in the Soloh-Aula

Hello forumchyane. I've been watching the forum for a long time and decided to take part too. I've been interested for a long time. I offer, in your opinion, a report on the trip: Moscow-Gelenzhik-Moscow 15.05. -03.06.2011. And then I see spring has not yet come, and everyone is already bored.

Yes, the report on Colombia is excellent, striking the richness and variety of scales, both day and night.
Our weekend trip to Adygea is much more prosaic. For me, this is the opening of the 2012 season.
The morning in Maykop, where I went to pick up Dima, his brother Andrey and Zhenya, a student of the biology faculty, was met with rain and a rather low temperature - about 0. After quickly loading our things, we went to the first point of the route - not far from Guzeripl.
On the previous day, it had snowed and the mountain tops were covered in snow.
DSC02370.JPG
The first series of traps were set in the rain, which then began to drizzle, then stopped for a while. The forest on the slopes is still without a single leaf, only flowering cyclamen of various shades, from soft white to rich lilac, bring variety.
DSC02362.JPG
DSC02376.JPG
DSC02377.JPG
At half past three, the rain finally stopped, and at the next point we set traps already in normal weather. We spent the night near the Dakhovskaya station. At night, the weather changed dramatically, a strong wind blew, which brought warming, and the morning met us with sun and warmth. By lunchtime, the air temperature had risen to 18 degrees.
After breakfast, we left for the last point of the route.
Dima and Zhenya for setting the trap.

In Stavropol, it was also +18 on Sunday, and on Monday it snowed all day.
Today it is sunny, but it does not rise above +2.
The absence of the Gulf Stream is just beginning to take its toll, and what will happen next....

I look in Stavropol and Volgograd spring and summer came at the same time.
Last Sunday, Mikhail Babansky and I went to set traps on the slopes of Lake Sengileevsky near Stavropol.
The snow was melting and the ground was dry. We don't have any ground squirrels ' burrows, as well as the ground squirrels themselves, but we set traps near the mouse burrows, because last season Taphoxenus gigas was trapped. It was overcast, but without rain, the temperature is about + 20.

And what are the primroses right behind the drilling process?

09.04.2012 20:11, sergey nyu

And what are the primroses right behind the drilling process?

Most likely, this is the red goricolor Adonis aestivalis, through the photo Adonis vernalis-spring goricolor. They are called "shaggy" because of the leaves.

The construction of the drill can be seen more clearly in the post URL #8575 on page 172 of the topic.

And what are the primroses right behind the drilling process?

These are shoots of a thin-leaved peony (Paeonia tenuifolia) - in 2-3 weeks we are waiting for photos of flowering plants wink.gif

09.04.2012 21:49, sergey nyu

Is there something inside the pipe?

The pipe is hollow. During drilling, a core of soil enters it, which is removed together with the drill from the mini well, and a trap glass is inserted instead of the soil. Then the soil from the drill is knocked out by improvised means, depending on the properties of the soil in this area.

Hello everybody!
Judging by the speed of increasing pages in the topic, the season has "popped".
I will also make a small contribution.
Yesterday morning Dima came to me and we went to Arkhyz.
The weather, as promised by the Internet, was beautiful. It's not hot in the morning, not a cloud in the sky.
And then the dome of the observatory loomed on the horizon, where we were going to stop first.
DSC02447.JPG
But before the ascent, although by car, you need to refresh yourself. We are for a healthy lifestyle. In glasses of kefir.
DSC02448.JPG
DSC02449.JPG
We got to Alpika without incident, but it was not very pleasant. The ground only warmed up about 10 centimeters, and there was no question of traps.
DSC02451.JPG
DSC02452.JPG
I had to start the descent and set traps in the places I liked.
During the descent, the temperature rose from +10 to + 19, so there is no question of permafrost.
From the road, we admired the snow-capped mountains, and although the photo does not convey all the charm of the mountains, but still...
DSC02454.JPG
DSC02455.JPG
Returning to the road, we turned in the direction of the village. Arkhyz, we drove through it and decided to get to the Sofiyskiye Polyany, since we filled out a normal gravel road and made a good bridge over B. Zelenchuk. But after crossing the river, we were unpleasantly surprised. The left bank of Zelenchuk was part of summer, but the right one...
DSC02459.JPG
DSC02460.JPG
The road turned out to be very busy, while we were standing, more than 10 cars drove in both directions. They learned from the descenders that there was also snow in the glades.
Returning to the main road, we admired more views that we never get tired of admiring.
DSC02462.JPG
DSC02464.JPG
Nymphalids are already flying along the left bank. Anguloptera, urticaria, whitefly, and lemongrass. I couldn't get a picture, because Ray showed interest in them and scared them off as soon as I started sneaking up on them.

Today we went to Stryzhament to set traps. The weather is beautiful, partly cloudy, +16. The wild garlic has already spread its leaves and the whole forest smells of garlic.
Unfortunately, I forgot my camera and I can't please you with photos of the green carpet made of wild garlic, as well as the place where the traps were installed on the procerus. Biotopes have taken over everything from thickets of wild garlic on clay soils, to a chaotic pile of large boulders and windbreaks. And up the slope, the snow hadn't melted yet.
Going down to the car, on the side of the road I caught such a "beast", which I photographed at home.
DSC02475.JPG
And such "animals" are crawling in the yard, and this is far from the largest representative of the species.
DSC02471.JPG
Cardamines are already flying in the city, dead eaters and dorcadians are crawling along the paths.

29.04 drive to KCR, Daut River and Indysh River gorges.
The morning was greeted with a bright sun and an air temperature of +14. Fruit trees began to bloom in the mountains, and potato planting began in the villages.

At nine-thirty in the morning, I arrived at the bridge over the Kuban River, the entrance to the Daut Gorge.

DSC02481.JPG
DSC02485.JPG
While setting traps on Dauta, the air temperature rose to +19.
After lunch, I moved to Indysh. Although the water in the river subsided, but the narzan in the spring gave off a little hydrogen sulfide. Locals say that this taste will go away by the summer. In previous years, indeed, it was not there. But closer to 15 o'clock, the weather began to deteriorate, and by four o'clock it even rained a little, so I was returning home in the cool. Of the butterflies, only whiteflies fly so far.
This morning, having seen Anthocharis cardamines in the city, I decided to drive along the road to Novomaryevka, where they are always in excess, but in addition to them, Iphiclides podalirius was pleasantly surprised, of which about 2 dozen flew on 5 km of the route, in addition, Pararge aegeria and Clossiana dia came across. And, of course, belyanka.

Yesterday (three weeks later) I went again, this time alone, to Arkhyz to the Zelenchuk Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences and to the Alpine meadows beyond the Sofia glades.
The ground at the top warmed up, and there were no problems with setting traps. The weather was overcast, but without rain, sometimes the sun shone through and at such moments at an air temperature of 14-16 it was really hot. The peaks of the surrounding mountains are still covered in snow.
DSC02503.JPG
DSC02504.JPG
I walked around the top, turned the stones, to no avail. I've started setting up traps, but there's no grass to hide at this time of year. Since last season, it has been eaten by cows and there is a short stubble available. I decided to use cow's "tortillas", since there were plenty of them, last year's. And here under the first flatbread sat a Carabus (Trachycarabus) bosphoranus. I had to suspend the installation of traps and turn over the "tortillas". As a result, two females of Carabus (Archiplectes) edithae markensis, a male of Carabus (Megodontus) aurolimbatus, and almost every "cake" of Carabus (Carabus) cumanus and bosphoranus were caught. Most likely, under manure, first of all, the ground remains moist, and secondly, the temperature regime is better than under stones.
DSC02505.JPG
In the afternoon I moved to the Psysh River valley to the Sofia Glades and then up to the Alpine meadows. Set traps at the 1980 m mark.
DSC02509.JPG
DSC02512.JPG

On the way back, I met a team of rafters and looked at the rapid of the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River, along which they were going to raft.

And finally, the result of manual collection.

A short report on the expedition to Abkhazia 26.04. -09.05.2012.
Sukhumi district, Bzybsky ridge, near the village. Pshu.
Participants: Entalex, DISAF, Dorcadion.
On April 24, we arrived by car in Krasnodar to visit Dima Fominykh. After a warm welcome, we resolved the remaining issues – buying tickets, groceries and additional equipment. On the 26th, we arrived in Abkhazia and went on a 2-week stand-alone program. The locations are amazing. The weather gave us a great gift – all the days, with the exception of one, were warm and sunny. The route was designed by Dima and executed almost flawlessly. There were also difficulties, well, where without them. About 12 fords through mountain rivers, which at this time are full of water. One of them is not childishly serious. Snowfields with deep gullies on the approach to the pass. Steep long climb to the pass with heavy backpacks. Dilapidated suspension bridges that can't be crossed without adrenaline. Regularly encountered fresh bearish tracks that do not cause much confidence in their capabilities. Light sleep in a dense "fairy" forest, night screams of owls, the sound of a roaring Buzzard, similar to the sound of an express train. A cloud covered the tent at the foot of the Achibah ridge at an altitude of about 1,600 m. Thorny vines in the Pontic forest, tearing at clothing and flesh. Mass of ticks on individual animal trails. Stunning starry sky over the snowy peaks of the Bzyb mountain range. All these experiences are, unfortunately, history. But the memories of this expedition will always be with us.
More than 1,000 soil traps have been installed at planned locations. For example, in one night, a series of about 300 traps included about 120 archiplects, about 300 C. janthinus janthinus, not counting small series of other taxa. I managed to pick up ground beetles with my hands under rocks and logs, as well as at night in the light of a flashlight.
Captured Carabus taxa:
C. (Microplectes) argonautarum reischitzi;
C. (Sphodristocarabus) janthinus novotnyorum;
C. (Sphodristocarabus) janthinus janthinus;
C. (Sphodristocarabus) janthinus dvorshaki;
C. (Eucarabus) cumanus;
C. (Megodontus) septemcarinatus;
C. (Pachycarabus) imitator katherinae;
C. (Tribax) apschuanus apschuanus;
C. (Tribax) apschuanus schoeni;
C. (Tribax) circassicus abasinus;
C. (Archiplectes) apollo tenebricosus;
C. (Archiplectes) juenthneri juenthneri;
C. (Archiplectes) juenthneri atchibachi;
C. (Archiplectes) juenthneri pshuensis;
C. (Archiplectes) satyrus pseudopshuensis;
C. (Archiplectes) sp.

I would like to express my gratitude to Dima Fominykh for his hospitality, amazing route, determination, and additional material on ground beetles!

All that remains to be added to the Entalex report is A. caucasica collected from various points along the entire route.And the females,I must say, from the mountainous regions are much darker than the Krasnodar ones.How to remove it from the straighteners, I'll post it for comparison...

Firstly, Dima will put almost everyone in the collection, taking into account its high variability, and secondly, how does this butterfly differ from others? Where it is, and it is almost everywhere in the western Caucasus, it's a fucking mess, what difference does it make then, catch alankastria or Moscow region moths?

I've never taken more than 20 butterflies of the same species just to give them away to my friends. If you add 100 instances of the same type from the same region to your collection... However, this is a matter of taste and the amount of space allowed for the collection. And the difference between a beautiful daytime butterfly and a nocturnal moth near Moscow is really not big. Only the first one, everyone can see in nature and get aesthetic pleasure from its contemplation (at least until they are all caught for their collections), and the second, except for catchers, no one will ever see in nature.

Only the first one, everyone can see in nature and get aesthetic pleasure from its contemplation (at least until they are all caught for their collections), and the second one, except for catchers, no one will ever see in nature.

I repeat that the view is changeable, and it is collected on a route of about 120 km, in isolated valleys and ridges, so it is still a little bit in fact, and everywhere it is a little different... And the rarity of this butterfly is very exaggerated, 50 kilometers from Krasnodar by its shaft... The main thing is to guess with a lie.

To catch a hundred individuals in one day is comparable to what natural predators do: significant damage to the population. This is unjustified and unacceptable :/
