Along the way, the Kharkiv Cemetery is a former (or still active) tank shooting range in the Malinovka area.Yes, it is very similar to the Aleshkovsky sands (Kherson region). It's just a pity that we don't have any Kherson views.
There is another very similar place in the area of the Samara forest (Dnepropetrovsk region). And also-an active tank training ground, eprst...
Maybe it is in those places that the Ukrainian Saturnia spini is hiding???

Winter, ono, koneshno, yes. And it wasn't much of a year for me, either... But still, there were happy meetings and great trips in 2011. In general, I hope that no one will be against the belated report on the spring trip to the Zaporozhye region. Shtil and I have long wanted to get to the neighboring region, and so, invited by Sasha Zhakov (Djon), we broke down for three days in mid-May on the Dnieper. Upon arrival, we fell into the hospitable "paws" of Vadim Mushinsky (Shustov), who arranged for us (as we later called it) a weekend of aristocratic entomology. In general, it was cool. On the first evening, we bivouacked in one of the steppe gullies.

Our tent in Robinia landing.

1_tent.jpg

and then they shone a glorious light on the steppe slopes and the bayrachny oak forest facing the Dnieper. We had it with us, the generator finally started up, unable to bear the threats, and the quiet Ukrainian night was approaching...

We, as pathetic foreigners, were struck by the degree of preparation of Vadim – we had the most complex devices were lighters.

And then it hit!

Shustov immediately called Djon and shared his impressions with each new raid of some kosher type. Meanwhile, Djon was sitting under another lamp on the bank of the Milk Estuary and doing the same. Shtil and I generally got the impression that the scale fauna of Zaporizhia has been studied a little more than completely. And the peasants know the arriving butterflies not only by their species names, but also by their first names (as if they even heard: "Here comes Vasily Ivanovich!").

On the same day, we went to another place, and Vadim asked us where we still want to go and chose the point himself. By the way, he took us twice along the DNEPROGES dam.

The steppe there was a little different, a forest without an oak tree.

Natives will later be excited by crop circles.

The next day we dashed to Balochka, where we SUDDENLY (tm) encountered almost the same expedition of Igor Kovalev (Egorus). We got acquainted. And we already didn't want to leave, but unfortunately there were 1-2 hours of fishing ahead. But the point paid off – for example, I found a new animal for the Left-bank Ukraine, and this point turned out to be the easternmost for its entire range. As intelligent people say-very, very drochibelny kind. Especially for Lesha Badaykin-Lesh, it was Merodon auripes! It does not exist at all and was not in domestic collections. Now there is.

I tried harder to catch, Lesh. By the way, sirfidam was generally not so hot, but those types that took-more than paid for all my suffering. This is fantastic-the view I discovered only last year, quite unexpectedly, in the Odessa region. Two males. Completely unknown - it was possible to determine only with the help of Ante Vujicic - so he still did not distinguish the neotype-the series was lost. The rarest thing. And then-bang - from two fishing lines-a series, 15 pieces, perhaps the largest series in the world. But you understand - it was impossible to disperse here, our method is individual terror.

Today I decided to take a look at what's going on in the steppe at this time, although the temperature was up to-6C, but it was clear, and as soon as the sun rose, the temperature rose to +8C by noon. In general, it was quite hot in the sun, I even had to take off my jacket, but there was frost where the sun's rays did not fall due to the long shadows. There was also frost almost everywhere under the rocks.

But nevertheless, there were some animals! There were quite a lot of spiders running around on the ground, near the pools where there was thin ice, some mosquitoes were flying along the banks, and this is probably all the activity. But there were more animals under the chunks of black rubber and similar black and thin shelters. Yes, and under the usual stones in the frost sat spiders, bedbugs, and crickets! It is very funny to watch how a cricket covered with frost, when exposed to the sun, thaws and begins to move, and then jump!
I concluded that packs and bedbugs are the most cold-resistant, crawling right through the frost!
I found three of Ameles Taurica's ootheques.

I've never gone anywhere before at this time, in princie, I see that it's not really in vain, there are a lot more animals in January and February than in December, even though December is usually very warm days. Obviously, the height of the sun and the heating of the soil are crucial.

The pictures are mostly very very small animals, except for the spider, which was approx. 6 mm in size, soldiers, the rest of the beetles were about 2-3 mm, including a small ground beetle, similar to embia, some kind of larva, a bug that clearly shows how long the shadow is at the end of December from the sun at noonsmile.gif, a cricket in the frost, and of course beetles-soldiers-harbingers of spring smile.gif

Some kind of winter-hardy staphylin, about 2 mm long

Egus, cool of course, but I hope that the cars did not go on virgin land, and then imagine, if you were still willing to travel like this, how would the beam change, you probably would not have recognized it wink.gif

In general, fortunately, fans of "collectively and civilly have fun in nature" are not drawn to the steppe, they are drawn to the water, well, and/or so that there is a "forest", kebabs there, fry, and therefore the coast of rivers and landings in places convenient for such oddykhs turned well, just into hell kapets! There you can only collect disposable dishes, containers from under booze, and other scrap)))

In general, it's cool when you go - and the steppe is all around, you can't see urban landscapes anywhere on the horizon, there are no bottles lying around, or any other products... And it's a pity to catch butterflies, I don't eat them, why kill them then, just because there are colored spots on the wings? wink.gif

By the way, a cool topic, a Novel. There were roads there, of course. Not every steppe can be traveled even by off-road vehicle. Somewhere in the Southern Black Sea region-maybe everything is flat there. And if it's somewhere on the Donetsk Ridge, I'm sorry. And what are your legs for? This is not Mongolia, everything is quite miniature. At the same time, it was discovered that there are practically no protected steppe areas in the Zaporozhye region, which we are used to in the east of Ukraine. On virgin land and there is nowhere to go wink.gif. But I should note that it was on that trip that I encountered the preventive protection of specific tracts by the entomologists themselves - the guys did not clear the roads of branches, undergrowth, etc., although all this mercilessly tried to scratch the body - in their opinion, they start driving yehu immediately. In the last ravine, by the way, we collected insects from one slope, and from the other we were watched by local aborigines harvesting hay-meadow-steppe ravine.

Where's the copperhead? wink.gif

31.12.2011 12:52, Hierophis

In the Southern Black Sea region, too, virgin land is all (almost) hilly, simply because it has been preserved only in gullies. Some beams have branches, and between them there is also a part of the "plain", on which it is clearly impractical to plow.
But the pod of most large beams has a machine track, although again, this track does not pose a special problem, since the car drives along it probably once a month and only along the track, without a dashing ride around the entire pod.
However, not all gullies are like this, there are places where there is crowding, there is more razezhzhen, traces of "picnics on the roadside" come across, but everything is lazy as it looks along the banks of rivers in the city area-do not compare.

Beams in the Nikolaev area are very large, I used to walk 40 km a day, usually approx. 30 km for a sortie, some gullies can only be passed with overnight stays normally, since the length of the hearth is up to 30 km, so there is a lot to walk around, there are many mounds, real shepherds are found, there are farms in hats and clothes of such an interesting cowboysmile.gif, they plow on horses, I saw smile.gifthem myself And ride horses - I remember the first time once I saw it, I was very surprised )

As for security - if they do it in Askania Nova - it's evil, there is no longer a steppe but a football field, only different ungulate animals run around instead of players,
the main problem of beams is that they don't plant trees, and the fact that they mow grass, graze cows, there are falls-from time immemorial it was so, and nothing nothing bad happened.

But such monophonic confused.gifolive, but really eek.gifthe tail is short.
Amazing near smile.gif yes.gif

31.12.2011 20:31, Hierophis

Water snakes very often have populations with a tendency to monotonous coloration, this happens in isolated populations that occur near reservoirs in gullies. In some places, grass snakes live almost entirely of melanistic color. But along the rivers, where the snake population is continuous and extensive, anomalies in color are difficult to meet, or rather, I have never met.
Here, too, is a water dragon from the same system of steppe foci, here you can already clearly see the keeled scales smile.gif
PS
Here is another example of the color of an ordinary grass snake, these snakes are called "Persian", and sometimes served as a subspecies. We have some populations where there are a lot of such snakes, but there are also ordinary ones, as well as near rivers where the usual color prevails, you can meet Persian ones. In general, we have an ordinary grass snake meets infrequently, yellow-bellied skids are more common, and water snakes dominate.

And it would be necessary to examine these. Karabuses and others really like to hang out there. So in the KCR this year, for half a week, a whole crowd of blue-purple Karabus with ribs on the elytra came to the battle with the remnants of Baltika No. 7. According to the stories in the Caucasus, this is the most banal kind. Please tell me who it is. And so in 2 weeks at the end of August, 5 species (for two) of Carabus were collected. 1 type of Cichruses, 1 type of racehorses. I wasn't very happy with the plates.
I take this opportunity to convey my greetings to Alexey Vishnyakov.
I also wish you all a Happy New Year 2012. I wish you all success in the new year. More new species, successful expeditions, and new collections.

I have already opened the season
today, So I went to the north, and this time I decided to ride my bike to the south, to the Southern Bug River
, of course-that's what I understand-new year! The sun is shining, it's warm, the flies are buzzing, the river is noisy))
Of the entomofauna, only these very flies, of different calibers, really caught my eye, but in addition to them I saw a reaper ant, which in fact could not be removed, it crawled very quickly.
In the pictures, in addition to the general views, you can see what the estuary worm-nereid looks like, one of the flies there in the pictures has a size of approx. 1.5 mm, the rest are quite ordinary.
On the way back, I noticed the sky-there were the most beautiful summer cumulus clouds of good weather. The temperature was about+6C, but on the southern slopes, where there was also no wind, it was very hot, and the ground was warm.

True, prgulka was not easy, on the way back I decided to go another, not civil, but dirt road, and recently it was raining, and I got slightly stuck there. And once again I confirmed that I would never buy a fancy bike with gear shifting and external brakes, because if I had such a bike, I don't even know what I would do)) The mud was so pesky that it was not even possible to roll the bike, carry it with a push, and I still had to walk half a kilometer, I already began to think, and not throw it, you can always buy it for 100 UAH, but the toad crushed it, and I don't want to drag the bag 7 km to the house

Gennady Shemberger, it is interesting that you came across a runner only in mid-February, given the climatic features of Anapa! We have reptiles in winter can meet probably only in February, I met only lizards, although at that time, and it was still a long time ago, I specifically did not look for anyone. This is now I decided to see how reptiles behave during strong warming in winter. Usually, we have yellow-bellied and Pallas's skids that appear in the second half of March, Crimean and green lizards in the first half of March, and quick ones in the second half.
We have a norm of average T in December 0C, in January -2.2, in February -1.7, and in Anapa December +5, January +2.7 February +2.7! Butterflies I observed in the vicinity of Nikolaev in the first half of December with strong warming but without rain and clear days, it was yellow, white, peacock eyes daytime at night, scoops and moths flew into the light. This year I didn't see any of this, because if it was warm, then there were heavy rains with strong winds, and during the day it was constantly overcast.
And in the city itself, the runners don't seem to live here, everything is too urbanized, otherwise they could also climb out in winter - after all, it is always much warmer in the city than outside the city.
